Food additive polyethylene glycol refers to oligomers or polymers of ethylene oxide, obtained by condensation polymerization of ethylene glycol or by addition polymerization of ethylene oxide with water.

Food Uses:

Medical Uses:
Polyethylene glycol can be used to modify drug proteins to protect drug molecules and extend their half-life.
Polyethylene glycol can serve as a cell fusion agent. It can cause the adhesion of adjacent cell membranes, subsequently leading to cell fusion into a single cell.
Polyethylene glycol can also be used as an osmotic laxative. Powder with a molecular weight of 3350 is commonly used, with a daily oral dose of 17g dissolved in water to treat constipation.
Industrial Uses
Additionally, polyethylene glycol is a food additive commonly used for coating candies and chocolate products. The usage amount refers to GB 2760-2011. In food, it can be used as a coating agent. It can also be used as a dispersant, carrier solvent, binder, plasticizer, coating agent, lubricant, and flavor aid. PEG400 is suitable for making soft capsules. Since PEG400 is a liquid, it has broad compatibility with various solutions, making it an excellent solvent and thickener. It is widely used in liquid preparations, such as oral liquids. When vegetable oil is unsuitable as a carrier for active ingredients, PEG is the preferred material, mainly due to its stability and resistance to spoilage. Additionally, it can be mixed with high molecular weight PEGs, and the mixture exhibits good solubility and compatibility. PEG4000, PEG6000, and PEG8000 are used in tablets, capsules, film coatings, pills, suppositories, etc. Due to its plasticity and ability to enhance drug release in tablets, high molecular weight PEGs (PEG4000, PEG6000, PEG8000) are highly useful as binders in tablet manufacturing. PEG gives tablets a glossy and smooth surface while making them less prone to damage. Furthermore, small amounts of high molecular weight PEGs (PEG4000, PEG6000, PEG8000) can prevent sugar-coated tablets from sticking to each other or to the bottle.
